Taking the Step: The Benefits of Talking to Strangers
Terrifying for some, and so easy for others—striking up conversations with strangers is a terrific skill to have, and it can come with a lot of benefits. If not already natural to you, it takes practice to become confident and comfortable when talking to someone for the first time. However, having the ability to take that first step with elegance and ease can open the door to a whole new world of opportunities, friendships, and experiences that are worth taking the time to hone this skill.
There are three aspects to consider to become better at approaching people: curiosity, vulnerability, and gratitude.
Curiosity
To become confident in striking up conversations with strangers, start by recognizing that everyone has something interesting or valuable to share. Ask yourself “what can I learn from this person?” and use this as an opportunity to open your mind.
When you're curious about someone, it's easy to talk to them. Not to mention, they will be more likely to respond positively if they can sense your interest in them. They will open up to you, and so, now in return, it's your turn to be vulnerable as well.
Vulnerability
Being vulnerable when talking to someone new is a great way to open up and form authentic connections. Don't use the opportunity to talk about yourself—instead, focus on learning more about the other person. Ask questions that demonstrate you are genuinely
